TyreSafe, BTMA, ITMA, and NTDA Form Unified Alliance to Tackle Tyre Related Road Risks

TyreSafe, the UK’s tyre safety charity, has announced two landmark partnerships with the British Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (BTMA) and the Imported Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA), marking the first time all four major pillars of the UK tyre industry are working together in formal alignment to advance road safety, compliance, and education. These new collaborations, following TyreSafe’s recent partnership with the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA), bring the UK’s retailers, manufacturers, importers, and safety advocates into a unified alliance with one clear goal: to eliminate harm caused by illegal and poorly maintained tyres.

Together, TyreSafe, NTDA, BTMA, and ITMA represent every stage of the tyre lifecycle, from design and manufacturing, to import, retail, fitting, and public education. The partnerships will focus on joint communication, evidence sharing, and the coordinated delivery of safety campaigns that reach drivers, fleets, and industry professionals nationwide.

The collaboration comes at a pivotal moment for the UK tyre sector, with rising concern over tyre condition at the point of replacement and the continued high number of tyre-related incidents on UK roads. The four organisations will work together to reinforce consistent messaging across all touchpoints from trade to consumer to ensuring that safety, compliance, and professionalism remain central to every part of the industry.

Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, said, “This is a truly defining moment for tyre safety in the UK. For the first time, TyreSafe, the NTDA, BTMA, and ITMA are standing together as one, aligning the voices of the entire tyre supply chain. By bringing together manufacturers, importers, retailers, and safety advocates, we’re creating a unified platform for education, evidence-based campaigning, and meaningful change.”

“This collaboration ensures that whether someone is buying a tyre, fitting one, importing one, wholesaling one or manufacturing one, the same clear message will be heard: safe tyres save lives.”

By combining data, technical expertise, and communication reach, the four organisations aim to make tyre safety messaging more consistent, accessible, and trusted among consumers and professionals alike.

This spirit of collaboration is already translating into real-world action. In October, TyreSafe and BTMA worked together on a joint on-the-ground activity at Exeter Services and Lymm Services (NW), where BTMA representatives joined TyreSafe’s campaign team to support a series of truck tyre safety checks. The exercise gathered valuable data on the condition of HGV tyres, providing practical insight into fleet tyre maintenance and compliance. The collaboration also saw TyreSafe and BTMA share technical resources and expertise on-site, a partnership that not only strengthens data-driven understanding but directly benefits road safety by reaching professional drivers and operators where it matters most.

Darren Lindsey, Chief Executive of the BTMA, commented, “The BTMA is delighted to formalise this partnership with TyreSafe. Our members are committed to ensuring that tyres designed, manufactured, and sold in the UK meet the highest standards of safety and performance. Working alongside TyreSafe, ITMA, and the NTDA allows us to reinforce these standards at every stage of the value chain, ensuring drivers receive consistent advice and support wherever they engage with the tyre industry. By uniting behind this shared vision, we can help save lives, reduce risk, and enhance public trust in our sector.”

Alfred Graham, President of ITMA, added, “The imported tyre sector plays a vital role in keeping the UK moving, and our members take that responsibility seriously. Partnering with TyreSafe and our colleagues at BTMA and NTDA is a major step forward in ensuring all drivers, regardless of what brand they choose, understand how tyre safety affects performance, cost, and compliance.

This collaboration brings together every part of the industry in one shared mission, improving safety standards and awareness for everyone on the road.”

Through coordinated campaigns, shared research, and combined outreach, the partnerships will enable more powerful engagement with the public, policymakers, and professionals. The initiative also reinforces TyreSafe’s ongoing commitment to collaboration as the charity prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026.

By working hand in hand, TyreSafe, NTDA BTMA, AND ITMA are setting a new benchmark for how industry and safety bodies can come together to reduce road casualties, promote best practice, and protect lives.
