The Classic Car Drive In Weekend Announces StarterMotor As Official Charity Partner

The Classic Car Drive In Weekend is very excited to partner with StarterMotor as its official charity for the three day event taking place at Bicester Heritage from the 18-20 September 2020. The partnership welcomes a new generation of young motoring enthusiasts to the world of classic cars, encouraging teens and young adults to take up careers in the historic vehicle industry and to most importantly, have fun whilst doing so!

During these unusual times, the rate of employment is unfortunately suffering, but The Heritage Skills Academy (based on the site of The Classic Car Drive In Weekend in Bicester) is currently training 80 male and female apprentices to take up jobs within the motoring sector. The industry contributes a whopping £5.5bn to the economy*, and now more than ever, it is crucial to continue to build and champion budding petrol heads to pave their way in the industry and harness new skills for life.

At The Classic Car Drive in Weekend, StarterMotor will be working with the talented apprentices from the Heritage Skills Academy, who will be presenting their StarterMotor projects. The Classic Car Drive In Weekend is also offering local schools and colleges the opportunity to bring their students to the Classic Car show element of the event free of charge on the first day of the show (18 September) to actively encourage more young people to get involved and get a taste of the industry.

Ashley Carr, 23-year old apprentice from Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire added: “I’ve always been interested in cars ever since I was little, and I used to go to classic car and hot rod shows with my family when I was growing up! I started working at Bicester Heritage last year to learn more about classic and vintage cars, my apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to work on some beautiful cars and help prepare them to go out all over the world which has been incredible! I love the look and engineering of Classic Cars and I feel like they have so much character, I want to continue learning as much as I can about them, and help them to stay on the road for as long as possible. When I have finished my apprenticeship, I want to carry on working in the restoration world and my ambition is to build a car and help out at the rallys that they go on.”

StarterMotor provides vehicles to education facilities, apprenticeship schemes and local colleges (including Banbury & Bicester College), to help provide resources for students to learn from, but also to use in competitions events and shows. The young motoring enthusiasts are given an introduction into a career in many different fields from engineering and sales, to event management and auctioneering. Spectacular projects on display over the three-day event will include the fully prepared and restored Austin 10, and a very special Humber Sports rebuild in association with the Coachmakers and Bonhams MPH.

On the partnership, Bas Bungish, Event Director of The Classic Car Drive In Weekend said: “The work that StarterMotor does to nurture new talent and support local young apprentices is outstanding, we are delighted that The Classic Car Drive In Weekend can provide a platform to showcase all the incredible work that the young men and women have put into restoring these classic cars. Our event is a great opportunity for young people in the local area, whether they have just left university and they are looking for the next step, or deciding which career path to take, to come along and see what a job in motoring could be like. We would love to see the next generation of young people driving, maintaining and enjoying historic cars as much as we all do!”

The Classic Car Drive In Weekend welcomes buyers, collectors and petrol-heads to the ultimate, covid-compliant, socially-distanced outdoor classic car event and Drive In cinema. The exciting event will be celebrating classic cars in all their glory on display, on track, on sale and on the silver screen. Movie buffs can drive in, park up and choose from a selection of films at the UK’s first Drive In cinema dedicated to all things cars. Films on offer include cult classic- The Italian Job – Racing Legends on the big screen Senna and Rush; along with power fueled blockbusters Baby Driver, Le Mans 66 and Gone in 60 Seconds.

Visitors to the three-day event will also have the opportunity to see over 500 stunning Classic cars on display from Britain’s leading car clubs, top dealers, a live auction courtesy of Bonhams MPH, classic car parades and track demonstrations, and hundreds of cars available to buy from leading retailers. In addition, The Technical Site at Bicester Heritage will be open with some of its resident specialists on hand to chat to visitors about all things cars – not only that, there will be a host of exhibitors, traders and classic car restorers to make this event unmissable for automotive enthusiasts.
