How Kumho Is Driving Sustainable Tyre Innovation Forward

Sustainability is rapidly becoming one of the most important considerations in the automotive sector and Kumho is a brand that is playing its part.

The future of sustainable mobility depends not only on what powers a vehicle, but also on the materials used to build every component that keeps it moving.

As a global tyre manufacturer supplying drivers around the world, Kumho Tyre recognises its responsibility to help create a more sustainable future. That commitment is driving significant investment in research and development, with a clear focus on increasing the use of sustainable, recycled and bio-based materials throughout tyre production.

Richard Lyons, Managing Director of Kumho Tyre UK, commented: “Sustainability is no longer a future consideration for the tyre industry; it is a responsibility that must be embedded into every stage of product development today.

“It requires us to carefully consider the materials we use, how those materials are sourced and how they can be recovered and reused at the end of a tyre’s life. Our investment in sustainable materials research reflects our long-term commitment to delivering products that not only perform to the highest standards but also contribute to a more sustainable future for the automotive industry.”

Rethinking the Building Blocks of a Tyre

A modern tyre is an incredibly sophisticated piece of engineering. Behind every product lies a complex blend of natural and synthetic rubber, carbon black, steel, textiles, silica and specialist chemicals, all carefully selected to deliver safety, durability and performance.

Historically, many of these materials have been derived from finite fossil-based resources. Kumho is working to change that.

The company is actively researching and evaluating a wide range of alternative materials, including bio-based resources, recycled content and recovered materials from end-of-life tyres. This approach supports Kumho’s long-term vision of reducing environmental impact while maintaining the high standards of quality and performance expected by customers worldwide.

Turning Ambition into Action

For Kumho, sustainability is not about a single initiative. It is about transforming the entire lifecycle of a tyre.

Kumho’s research programmes are focused on three key areas – renewables, recycling, and reducing. For renewables, Kumho is working on bio-based alternatives to legacy materials such as bio based SBR, rice husk silica, and bio-based resins.  For recycling Kumho’s scientists are exploring the use of end-of-life tyres, and reducing covers both weight saving technologies and innovative approaches to rolling resistance to reduce fuel consumption.

The objective is to move towards 100% sustainable materials with each advancement representing another step towards reducing reliance on fossil-based resources and creating a more circular approach to manufacturing.

The Road to Net Zero

By 2045, Kumho aims to support a future where sustainable materials play a central role in tyre production, helping contribute towards net-zero carbon ambitions while reducing waste throughout the value chain.

Achieving this transformation requires continuous innovation, collaboration and investment. However, Kumho believes sustainable progress must never compromise the qualities that matter most to drivers.

Performance Remains Non-Negotiable

While sustainability is a major focus, Kumho understands that every tyre must continue to deliver the safety, reliability and performance demanded by today’s vehicles.

Whether fitted to passenger cars, SUVs, electric vehicles or commercial vehicles, tyres must perform consistently in a wide range of conditions. This is why Kumho’s material development programme places equal emphasis on environmental responsibility and product performance.

The challenge is not simply finding alternative materials. It is identifying solutions that can meet the rigorous standards expected from a modern tyre while supporting a more sustainable future.

Driving the Industry Forward

The transition to sustainable mobility will require innovation across the entire automotive ecosystem. At Kumho Tyre, that journey is already well underway.

Through ongoing investment in sustainable materials research and a clear commitment to circular economy principles, Kumho is helping to shape the next generation of tyre technology.

Because the tyres of the future will not simply be judged by how they perform on the road, but by how responsibly they are made before they ever reach it.
