A German brand with more than 120 years of engineering heritage is strengthening its presence in the UK independent aftermarket. Wahler, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of coolant thermostats and oil temperature thermostats, will once again have its commercial vehicle and passenger car parts distributed by Thermal Management Solutions (TMS), across Europe and worldwide, effective immediately.
For UK garages, the move represents a significant addition to the premium thermal management category. Wahler products are manufactured to OE (Original Equipment) specification at the company’s certified production facility in Oberboihingen, Germany, the same plant that supplies components to leading vehicle manufacturers including Jaguar Land Rover. The direct sales model strengthens collaboration with system partners, enabling customers across the independent aftermarket to benefit from OE-grade quality, technical expertise and improved product availability. Parts reach the market through the established independent aftermarket wholesale structure, via distributors.
The Wahler range encompasses mechanical thermostats, map-controlled thermostats in a range of designs and configurations, and innovative valves for temperature-independent flow control. These technologies are increasingly relevant not just for conventional combustion vehicles, but also for hybrid powertrains and Range-Extended Electric Vehicles (REEVs), an important consideration as the UK car parc continues to diversify.
At its Oberboihingen site in Germany, Wahler manufactures around three million thermostats, oil regulator units and elements each year. Globally, production reaches six million units. The facility operates on approximately 100 modern assembly lines, is certified to IATF 16949 and ISO 14001, and has operated with climate-neutral assembly since 2025, supported by a large photovoltaic installation and internal CO₂ compensation measures.
One of the persistent frustrations in the independent aftermarket is the No Fault Found (NFF) return: parts replaced, jobs completed, yet the fault persists or the original part comes back serviceable. TMS says the direct model is specifically designed to address this, through closer technical support structures and trained system partners who can assist with correct part identification and application guidance.
“In sales processes, we work with trained system partners, which allows us to provide the necessary technical support. This translates into fewer unnecessary part replacements and a reduction in NFF returns,” explained Holger Kiebel, Managing Director, Thermal Management Solutions DE Oberboihingen GmbH
The company is also investing in safety stock for high-volume IAM part numbers – a direct response to supply chain volatility that has tested workshops and factors in recent years.
“We consistently build our supply chain and production on a European base: working with qualified suppliers, developing a multi-sourcing approach for critical components, and increasing the share of in-house production in key processes. We invest in safety stocks for high-volume IAM references to ensure availability even during periods of high market volatility,” added Kiebel.
Wahler was founded in 1902. For over a century it has operated as a Tier 1 supplier to some of the most demanding OEM customers in the automotive industry. The brand’s visual identity – built around the panther, a symbol of precision, responsiveness and focus – reflects the company’s operational values: fast, decisive, technically assured.”
“By resuming direct sales, we are moving even closer to our customers in the independent aftermarket,” Kiebel added. “Our OE expertise, in-house development, validation and production capabilities, as well as climate-neutral assembly in Oberboihingen, form the foundation for reliable premium quality, short supply routes and high supply chain security.”
